Custom working room
Retention Atelier
A dashboard will happily draw a retention curve from whatever event you feed it. The Atelier is the room in which we argue about that feed: which action counts as being alive in the product, how long the window may be, and what we are prepared to say when the curve looks fashionable.
What the room is for
You arrive with a product question that has been collapsed into “improve retention”. We unpack it until it is a sentence: returning to complete a second paid week; returning to finish a lesson; returning because a push notification bullied the graph.
Then we draw a ledger by hand — dates down the side, cohort labels across — before anyone opens a tool. The humiliation of a paper ledger is the point. It makes silent assumptions audible.
What it is not
It is not a growth sprint. We will not promise a percentage. We will not install a lifecycle-messaging vendor. If your names are still synonyms of each other, we will send you to Signal Architecture first; cohorting a dirty stream only manufactures confidence.
A sitting, in outline
-
A
Qualify the living
Agree the event that means the person did the product, not merely unlocked the phone. App-open is almost never that event, however cheap it is to log.
-
B
Choose a window you can defend
Billing cycles, content release cadence, and United Kingdom bank holidays all distort “week”. We write the window in prose, including the ugly exceptions.
-
C
Name the drop
Drop-off is not a moral failure. We practise language that finance, support, and product can share without turning the curve into a verdict on the team.
Sit the Atelier
The Retention Ledger programme is the taught version of this room. The Atelier itself is offered as a private sitting for organisations that already have a freeze. Either way, begin with a note to the desk.
